Freedom Dance Project Artist Statement

An appreciation of the joy of movement and contemplation of the concept of freedom is what I hope these images evoke in the viewer.

After I styled and directed the professional dancers regarding the initial concept for movement and composition, we collaborated during the shoot. Their seemingly effortless dance movements require extraordinary skill and strength developed over a lifetime of practice. During post-processing, I wanted to interpret the digital images further to depart from the color originals, utilizing the benefit of extensive digital retouching and rendering them classic black and white. I worked on this series in New York City with professional dancers Jason Garcia Ignacio, Kevin Cosculluela, Jackie Nowicki, Amelia Sturt Dilley, and Deijah Robinson at Lois Greenfield's studio using a Hasselblad 500cm and Leaf digital back. The production of these images is a true collaborative effort that has benefited a number of causes.

These photographs were presented in various exhibitions including an exhibit drawing attention to global 21st slavery and at a benefit supporting young women in Connecticut. A portion from any sales proceeds of these photographs is donated to charitable causes.
